Thank you for your purchase from Opti-Cool Welding Lenses. Every client is important to me, and I care about your feedback. Please continue reading to learn about lens care and how to clean your lenses.
Here you will find:
Once you buy one of my 2pc or 3pc lenses, you must know how you take care of it.
Step One
Treat it like an expensive tool, and don't abuse it. Please don't stick your face in the puddle, don't leave it face-down in the dirt, and don't drop it or lay it right next to your finished weld.
Step Two
Don't leave it in your truck or the glove box. Just don't. It gets hotter and colder in the car/truck and glovebox than outside.
Step Three
Laminated Glass handles heat well, but temps below freezing they don't. Glass contracts when it gets cold and the laminate can only handle so much of the strain of holding 2 or 3 different pieces of Glass together when it gets extremely cold. So it's best to warm it up in your jacket before using it at the start or during lunch and take it out of your hood at the end of the day if it's brutally cold.
Don't just spark up and rapidly heat cold Glass. It can de-laminate or crack.
Step Four
Don't shock the Glass. This applies to thermal shock. Don't cool it off with water if it gets really hot. And don't heat it too fast if it's extremely cold. No glass can handle that. It will come apart.
Welding is grimey work. It is what it is, especially if you do a lot of grinding. For my 2 and 3-pane lenses: - spritz them with soapy water, use a microfiber cloth, and rinse and wipe dry with a clean microfiber cloth. You can also use diluted Windex.
Do Not
Wipe it with a paper towel, your shirt, your Nomex, your jeans, etc. That stuff alone won't hurt the Glass, but any tungsten shards, metal fines, grinding dust, etc., will scratch the Glass. These scratches on these lenses will have virtually zero effect on the visual quality of the lens, but you must avoid them.
Accept that these are consumable products and aren't meant to last forever. You can prolong their suffering by cleaning them using the methods I described above for the 2 and 3-pane lenses, but understand that any scratches, haze, dullness, or bright streaks that develop will only worsen over time.
The Acrylic drop-in lenses are also not meant to last forever. These can be easily cleaned with soapy water and dried with a very, very fine microfiber cloth like eyeglasses. But, eventually, they will get a little hazy and dull.
There is a product called NOVUS-plastic polish and restorer. You can also use it on the glass 2 and 3-pane lenses with decent results if you do not use the heavy scratch remover compound.
A Handmade welding lens deserves no less than a handmade welding lens case. My Wife hand-stitches these vinyl leather lens cases with felt inner lining and a doubled-over lip that keeps the lens from slipping out.
They are $7.50 ea + $2.50 shipping. A sound investment for a great welding lens.
Keeping your lens clean is essential to enjoy using it. It is hard to be happy working with your eyes when you can't see. NOVUS 3-step polisher and cleaner works extremely well for just these tasks. Just follow the instructions carefully. Do not use anything other than clean/polish on a single pane gold face lens IF you decide to use this product on your Aulektro or Svar glass lens.
NOVUS3 step buffing and cleaning compounds for removing medium and fine scratches and haziness in plastic (Acrylic) and Glass. Do not use Aulektro or Svar single pane lenses on the gold face.
I no longer carry NOVUS but it can be had for $15 + shipping on eBay
Use large Microfiber cloths for deep cleaning and polishing. Don't use these with the Acrylic add-on lenses. Use these only with glass lenses. The same type of cloth I USE to do the final cleaning before sending out your lens. These should be the highest fiber count. Use only eyeglass cloths on acrylic add on lenses.
If you have any doubts, concerns, questions or comments, PLEASE connect with me.
Lenses last on average from 1-3 months depending on the type of occupation it is used for. There is no guarantee of how long it will last.
